The Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and the United States of America have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen health cooperation, strengthen health security, and build a resilient, self-reliant health system for Nigerians. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the agreement as a strategic partnership to improve disease surveillance, outbreak response, laboratory systems, access to essential healthcare, and support for frontline workers.

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to progressively increase domestic health financing alongside US grant support over the next five years. The partnership is expected to mobilise nearly US$5 billion in combined domestic and international funding to reinforce ongoing health sector reforms and expand quality primary healthcare nationwide.

The MoU builds on ongoing initiatives, including the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the 2023 Health Sector Renewal Compact, launched under President Tinubu’s administration. These reforms aim to improve healthcare accessibility, affordability, quality, accountability, and efficiency, strengthening Nigeria’s health security and sustainable healthcare delivery.
