President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made history in Nigeria’s legal education sector by appointing Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. She will be the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment in 1962, with her four-year tenure starting on 10 January 2026.
Dr Odusote, 54, currently serves as Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus. She will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure ends on 9 January 2026. President Tinubu described the appointment as “a significant milestone in promoting excellence and inclusivity in Nigeria’s legal education system.”
A highly respected legal scholar, Dr Odusote earned her LL.B and LL.M degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, specialising in company and commercial law. She later obtained a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, focusing on Public Law and the administration of justice.
Since joining the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer, Dr Odusote has held several key positions, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus. She was also a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK and has published extensively in local and international legal journals.
Throughout her career, Dr Odusote has contributed to numerous legal education conferences and served on committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association. As Director-General, she will oversee academic leadership, administrative management, and strategic direction across all campuses, while acting as the main liaison between the Law School, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.
President Tinubu’s appointment of Dr Odusote is being hailed as a landmark decision that not only recognises merit and expertise but also advances gender representation in Nigeria’s top legal institutions.
