President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Opeyemi Agbaje, a former Executive Director at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom). His appointment comes days after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the reconstitution of the commission’s governing board.
Agbaje, a seasoned professional with over four decades of experience in law, banking, finance, academia, and business consulting, is widely regarded as a thought leader on economic and policy matters. A law graduate of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), he holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Lagos, an MBA from IESE Business School in Spain, and is currently completing a doctorate in Business Administration from Eaton Business School.
Beyond his banking career, where he rose to Executive Director at GTBank before exiting in 2004, Agbaje has built an impressive profile as Founder and CEO of RTC Advisory Services Ltd, a policy and strategy consulting firm. He has also contributed to academia as a senior fellow at Lagos Business School, and to public service through roles with the Lagos State and Ogun State Security Trust Funds. Known for his policy commentary in BusinessDay and Channels TV, Agbaje brings to PenCom a blend of private sector expertise, policy experience, and institutional leadership.
