Title: President Tinubu Approves Establishment of Two New Federal Universities in Osun and Ekiti

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, signed two bills into law, establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement titled “President Tinubu Signs Bills Establishing New Federal Universities for Osun, Ekiti States.”

According to the statement, President Tinubu emphasized that the new specialized institutions will address the educational needs of Nigerians while driving research, innovation, and economic growth.

“These institutions will serve as training grounds for developing professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy,” the statement read.

This development comes as Nigeria continues to expand its higher education landscape. Data from the National Universities Commission (NUC) shows that the country currently has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities.

The President’s approval of the two new universities follows his earlier decision on February 3, 2025, to establish the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni town of Tai, Rivers State. Additionally, he consented to the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, which will be transformed into a federal institution.

These initiatives underscore the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and fostering innovation to drive national development.
