At the invitation of the National Economic Council (NEC) to its 150th meeting, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) presented the 2025 Flood Preparedness and Response Strategies and shared critical insights into the current flood situation across the country.
Following the presentation, the National Economic Council, with the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has directed the release of a N129 billion special intervention fund to support nationwide flood mitigation and response efforts.
The approved disbursements are as follows:
• N3 billion each to the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT);
• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning;
• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Environment;
• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation;
• N10 billion to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
This strategic and timely intervention reflects the unwavering commitment of President Tinubu’s administration to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens across Nigeria.
However, the success of this effort depends on collective action. NEMA has urged State Governments to strengthen their State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), activate Local Emergency Management Councils (LEMCs), and ensure strict enforcement of physical planning regulations and building code compliance.
NEMA reaffirmed its readiness to continue working closely with State Governments, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), LEMCs, and other key stakeholders to deliver a coordinated, swift, and effective flood response across the country.
