President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai as he marks his 100th birthday, describing him as the “last man standing” among the heroes who fought for Nigeria’s liberation from colonial rule.
In a statement issued on Thursday, President Tinubu praised Yakasai’s lifelong commitment to justice, freedom, and national development, noting that the centenarian’s early experiences under colonial repression inspired him to join the struggle for Nigeria’s independence.
Alhaji Yakasai, born in Kano a century ago, was a frontline member of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), led by the late Mallam Aminu Kano. Through NEPU, he played a key role in mobilising political consciousness in Northern Nigeria and contributing to the broader Independence movement.
Following Independence in 1960, President Tinubu noted that Yakasai remained unwavering in his belief in Nigeria’s unity and progress. His public service record includes serving as Commissioner in Kano State under Military Governor Audu Bako and later as Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic.
The President described Yakasai as a “consensus builder” who has consistently championed peaceful coexistence, national cohesion, and democratic consolidation throughout his life.
President Tinubu emphasised that celebrating Yakasai at 100 is not only a tribute to his personal achievements but also to a century of sacrifice, patriotism, and steadfast support for progressive ideals.
He joined family, associates, and well-wishers in honouring the statesman ahead of his centenary on December 5, 2025.
