President Bola Tinubu joined family, friends, and dignitaries on Sunday to celebrate the 80th birthday of Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Nigeria’s former Representative to the United Nations. The event, held in Abuja, was a tribute to Gambari’s illustrious career as a diplomat, scholar, and global statesman.

In a message delivered by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, President Tinubu described Gambari as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished diplomats and a global figure of unparalleled repute. He highlighted Gambari’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomacy, strengthening democracy, and advancing national development.

Reflecting on Gambari’s decades of service, Tinubu praised his contributions to global peace, governance, and history-defining moments. Among his many achievements, Gambari played a central role in coordinating the global fight against apartheid as Chairman of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.

“Twenty-five years ago, when Nigeria embarked on a renewed democratic journey, Professor Gambari was one of a few national icons whose global stature was an asset for the nation, and he has remained one of those shining stars,” Tinubu said.

Having worked with four UN Secretaries-General and seven Nigerian heads of government, Gambari’s career has been marked by significant milestones. These include his involvement in initiating the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and mediating in the world’s largest peacekeeping mission as a joint special representative of the UN Mission in Darfur.

Tinubu also commended Gambari’s influence on Nigeria’s foreign policy and his role as a mentor to generations of diplomats and public servants.

“Your dedication, expertise, and passion for diplomacy have left an indelible mark on our country’s relationships with the global community. Your selfless service has inspired generations of diplomats and public servants,” Tinubu remarked.

The President noted that the presence of high-profile dignitaries at the event underscored Gambari’s extensive impact on Nigeria and the world.

As he congratulated Gambari on reaching this milestone, Tinubu hailed his unwavering commitment to promoting peace and understanding. “Your dedication to improving the world by serving Nigeria and championing global harmony is an inspiration to all,” he said.

The celebration of Gambari’s 80th birthday was a fitting recognition of a life dedicated to service, diplomacy, and nation-building.
