President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday in Abuja charged the newly sworn-in Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to uphold peace and stability in the nation by being fair and just in their service. The President, who administered the oath of office to Chairman Hulayat Ayo Omidiran and the commissioners, urged them to contribute to the growth and advancement of the country, describing the commission as the nation’s conscience.

Emphasising the critical role of the FCC in stabilising the country, President Tinubu stated: “What you represent here today is the conscience of our nation. What you have been assigned to do is to promote and stabilise the conscience of this country, to ensure diligent, committed and patriotic citizenry.” He further called on citizens to support national development, noting that Nigeria has all it takes to be prosperous and productive given its human and natural resources.

In response, Chairman Omidiran thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and assured that the commission would fulfil its constitutional mandate. “On behalf of all of us here, we promise to promote the strength of our diversity and rekindle the hope and aspirations of Nigerians in carrying out our constitutional mandate, under your guidance,” he said. The FCC is tasked with ensuring equitable distribution of socio-economic amenities, development projects, and employment opportunities, with one commissioner representing each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
