The Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, inaugurated the temporary opening of the 37.9-kilometre Bodo–Bonny Road and Bridges Across the Opobo Channel. The road directly links the mainland to Bonny Island, easing travel for riverine communities previously dependent on hazardous waterways. Operational guidelines restrict motorcycles, tricycles, and heavy-duty trucks, with future plans for dualisation and toll-based maintenance.
Commenced in October 2017 and about 91% complete, the project features over 3 kilometres of bridges, including the 502-metre Alpha Creek Bridge. Enhancements through project savings include solar-powered streetlights, CCTV cameras, and tree planting, ensuring safety and sustainability for road users.
The inauguration ceremony drew Rivers State officials, National Assembly members, traditional rulers, and community leaders, who praised the road as transformational for commerce, travel, and development in the Niger Delta, highlighting the Tinubu administration’s commitment to delivering modern infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
