President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory in the December 7 general election. Tinubu’s message came after the concession speech of Mahama’s main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a telephone conversation, President Tinubu expressed optimism that Mahama’s second tenure as Ghana’s leader would enhance regional stability and strengthen the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Tinubu serves as chairman.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted Tinubu’s commendation of the Ghanaian people for their peaceful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections. Tinubu described the electoral process as a testament to Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democracy and its role as a beacon of hope for Africa.
“Ghanaians have once again shown the world that democracy remains the preferred path to achieving political stability, economic development, and transparent governance,” Tinubu remarked.
The Nigerian leader lauded Dr. Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding defeat prior to the official declaration of results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission, calling it a reinforcement of Ghana’s democratic principles.
Reflecting on Mahama’s victory, Tinubu noted that his return to Jubilee House, having served as President from 2012 to 2017, demonstrates the Ghanaian people’s trust in his leadership. Tinubu also acknowledged Mahama’s extensive political experience, which includes roles as Vice President, Member of Parliament, and Minister.
President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to fostering closer ties with Ghana, emphasizing shared history, cultural bonds, and mutual goals in democracy, the rule of law, and economic integration. He praised outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his leadership and contributions to Ghana’s development and regional peace.
Looking ahead, Tinubu expressed hope for strengthened bilateral cooperation with Mahama’s administration, pledging to work together toward a prosperous and united West Africa.
