Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima will depart Abuja on Saturday, July 12, for São Tomé, the capital of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the country’s 50th Independence Day celebration.

The Vice President will join several African and global leaders at the grand finale of events marking the Golden Jubilee of the Central African island nation’s independence.

The celebration will feature official speeches, military parades, cultural displays, and traditional performances, all reflecting the unique heritage and unity of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe maintain a strong and strategic bilateral relationship, particularly through joint resource development efforts in the Gulf of Guinea. This cooperation is anchored by the Nigeria–São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority (NSTPJDA), which oversees the Joint Development Zone (JDZ).

Beyond economic collaboration, Nigeria has continued to support São Tomé and Príncipe through technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and humanitarian aid, including support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of his official engagement.
