In a recent statement, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has refuted circulating reports suggesting that the President has demanded the resignation of Yemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Onanuga labeled these claims as “a bundle of lies” and confirmed that President Tinubu has not made any such request.
The denial comes in response to rumors that President Tinubu instructed Cardoso to resign before his trip to China, despite significant efforts by Yoruba leaders to retain him. Cardoso, who was nominated by Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and officially took office a week later, has faced criticism regarding his handling of Nigeria’s economic issues and the instability of the Naira.
Cardoso, a respected economic and development policy advisor, succeeded Folashodun Shonubi as acting CBN Governor after receiving clearance from the National Assembly. The presidential spokesman’s comments aim to clarify any confusion and reaffirm Cardoso’s position amidst ongoing economic challenges.
