In response to the nationwide debate surrounding the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Justice to collaborate with legislators to address concerns and ensure the legislation reflects the best interests of the Nigerian people.

The President emphasized that his administration remains committed to fostering democracy and promoting transparency, stating, “The robust nationwide debate on the new tax reform bills is both welcomed and commendable. It is inspiring to see Nigerians from all walks of life expressing their views on these critical national issues. This is the very essence of democracy.”

A Call for Constructive Dialogue

President Tinubu urged commentators and advocacy groups to maintain a spirit of respect and understanding during discussions, cautioning against divisive rhetoric. He added, “There should be no room for name-calling or unnecessary ethnic and regional slurs in this important national conversation.”

Dispelling Misinformation

The President also addressed concerns about misinformation surrounding the reforms, assuring citizens that the fiscal measures will not weaken federal agencies or marginalize any region. Instead, he highlighted that the reforms aim to bring relief to millions of hardworking Nigerians and empower state and local governments for sustainable growth.

Key Benefits of the Reforms

Fiscal Empowerment: The reforms are designed to devolve more resources to Nigeria’s states and 774 local governments, enhancing their capacity for growth and development.

Transparency and Accountability: Citizens will benefit from increased revenue generation without additional tax burdens, alongside improved accountability in public resource management.

Critical Investments: Revenue conserved from these reforms will be allocated to critical sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, and digital technology, ensuring no Nigerian is left behind under the Renewed Hope agenda.

Legislative Engagement

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process, stating that the reforms are not being rushed and welcoming meaningful input to address any gaps in the bills. He has directed relevant officials to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure all genuine concerns are resolved.

Historic Fiscal Reforms

Describing this moment as transformative, the President noted, “We are witnessing the most far-reaching, impactful, and beneficial set of fiscal reforms that Nigeria has seen in decades.”

Additionally, the President highlighted the 2023 Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for local governments as a complementary development that will empower the tier of government closest to the people.

As Nigerians continue to deliberate on these reforms, the Tinubu administration remains steadfast in its pledge to champion policies that conserve public resources, close financial loopholes, and deliver lasting benefits to all citizens.
