The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has commenced the construction of a 7-megawatt solar power project at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano State. The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to deliver uninterrupted electricity to critical health facilities across the country.
The project, designed as a solar hybrid system, will address the hospital’s longstanding dependence on diesel generators and unreliable public power supply. With monthly diesel costs running into tens of millions of naira, the intervention is expected to drastically reduce expenses while ensuring that sensitive hospital units such as intensive care, operating theatres, and laboratories are powered round the clock.
Officials noted that President Tinubu personally approved funding for solar hybrid projects in the 2025 Federal Budget, with AKTH chosen as a pilot model for similar projects in teaching hospitals nationwide. The move reflects the administration’s emphasis on both renewable energy adoption and the improvement of healthcare delivery.
Upon completion, the 7MW solar facility will make AKTH largely energy self-sufficient, guaranteeing reliable electricity for patient care, reducing carbon emissions, and setting a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in Nigeria’s health sector.
