President Tinubu Flags Off Torch of Unity for 2025 National Sports FestivalAbuja, March 25, 2025 – President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the Torch of Unity Movement for the 22nd National Sports Festival, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to sports development in Nigeria. The festival, themed “Gateway Games”, will be held in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30, 2025.During the flag-off ceremony at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu described sports as a unifying force and a catalyst for youth engagement, national cohesion, and economic growth. He urged both public and private sector stakeholders to invest in infrastructure, talent development, and sponsorship of sporting events to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global sports.“The National Sports Festival, since its inception in 1973, has served as a platform for unity and talent discovery,” Tinubu stated. “Every step we take towards this festival is not just about preparing for a sporting event but reaffirming our collective commitment to nation-building through sports.”Torch of Unity to Travel Across NigeriaThe Torch of Unity, symbolizing peace, strength, and solidarity, will journey through all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory before arriving in Ogun State for the festival’s opening.President Tinubu honored Nigerian sporting legends, paying special tribute to Olympic medalist Falilat Ogunkoya, who was named the National Torch Bearer. He also extended his best wishes to the Super Eagles in their FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo, expressing confidence in their success.Ogun State Ready to Host Over 10,000 AthletesGovernor Dapo Abiodun assured that Ogun State is prepared to deliver a world-class sporting event, welcoming over 10,000 athletes. He announced that, for the first time in the festival’s history, all athletes will be accommodated in a single, purpose-built facility, ensuring comfort and camaraderie.“Our facilities meet international standards, and we are set to deliver a festival that will break records in organization, participation, and excellence,” Abiodun stated. He also highlighted the participation of elite athletes such as Anthony Joshua and Tobi Amusan, reinforcing Nigeria’s global sporting influence.Historic Inclusion of Junior AthletesFor the first time, the National Sports Commission (NSC) will sponsor top junior athletes under the newly introduced Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) category, marking a historic milestone in the festival’s evolution.At the Presidential Villa, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme, handed over the Festival Torch of Unity to NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, who then presented it to President Tinubu. The torch was passed to the Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Hon. Bukola Olopade, before being entrusted to Falilat Ogunkoya to begin its journey across the country.With preparations in full swing, the 22nd National Sports Festival promises to showcase the best of Nigerian sports talent while promoting unity and national development.
