President Bola Tinubu on Friday inaugurated an 11-member committee to oversee the incorporation of the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO), a new initiative aimed at optimising Nigeria’s power generation, transmission, and grid management.
The committee’s inauguration follows the Federal Executive Council’s approval for GAMCO at its Wednesday meeting. The company is designed to tackle challenges of stranded power, grid inefficiencies, and transmission bottlenecks across the country.
Speaking at the event, the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who led the inauguration on behalf of the President, described the committee as “critical to realising the President’s vision for a revolutionary power sector.” He said the committee would review existing laws, policies, and frameworks governing generation, transmission, distribution, and market operations.
The committee, chaired by the Chief of Staff, includes the Attorney–General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Ministers of Power, Works, Finance, Communication and Digital Economy, Science, Technology and Innovation, Aviation and Aerospace Development, the Minister of State (Petroleum), the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, and energy expert Professor Yemi Oke. Dr John Chidiebere Ezeamama, Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, serves as secretary.
GAMCO will pilot the recovery of stranded power using the Benin-Lagos transmission corridor, leveraging the Omotosho (513 MW), Olorunsogo (754 MW), and Ihovbor (508 MW) National Integrated Power Plants. The company projects recovering at least 1,600 MW within 18–24 months, alongside constructing a new 330KV+ double-circuit transmission line.
Fully owned by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, GAMCO aims to modernise transmission evacuation, mobilise private capital, and improve electricity reliability. The initiative is expected to boost industrial productivity, investor confidence, job security, and welfare outcomes, aligning with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
