President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a nationwide diabetes screening programme aimed at detecting and managing the rising burden of diabetes in Nigeria. The initiative utilises locally manufactured OnPoint Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems, produced by Colexa Biosensor Ltd in Lagos, marking a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare delivery.
The programme, which began in the North-Central geopolitical zone, is set to cover all 774 Local Government Areas, targeting five million Nigerians for early diabetes detection. Over 77,000 monitoring devices will be distributed to diagnosed patients and primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the country.
As part of the rollout, thousands of healthcare workers at PHCs will receive training on using the monitoring systems and conducting community-based screenings. This approach ensures that early detection and follow-up care are available at the grassroots level.
President Tinubu commended the role of local manufacturers in supporting the country’s healthcare sector, emphasizing that the initiative will not only improve access to essential diagnostics but also reduce dependence on imported medical devices. He stated that the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to preventive healthcare and building resilient, locally-driven healthcare solutions for all Nigerians.
