In a decisive move to combat food insecurity and transform the agricultural landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a comprehensive, technology driven, youth led agribusiness initiative aimed at modernising Nigeria’s food systems and boosting national productivity.
This bold push is anchored on the Renewed Hope Agenda and is designed to shift Nigeria from subsistence farming to a commercially viable, technology enabled agricultural economy. Central to the strategy is youth inclusion, mechanisation, and the use of innovation to drive sustainable food production across the country.
A major component of the initiative is a landmark one billion dollar partnership between Nigeria and Brazil, which will fund the deployment of mechanised farming equipment, training centres, and service hubs in key agricultural regions. The agreement is expected to scale up food production, enhance rural livelihoods, and attract investment into the agribusiness sector.
Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, headed by Minister Abubakar Kyari, has implemented large scale interventions that include the expansion of dry season farming, the distribution of over 2.15 million fertiliser bags, and the provision of support to thousands of young farmers through farm settlements, agri entrepreneurship programmes, and smart agriculture initiatives.
With the agricultural sector now contributing more than 25 percent to the nation’s GDP, data from recent performance reviews show progress in key areas such as irrigation development, agro processing, and value chain linkages. The government’s investment through the 100 billion naira National Agricultural Development Fund and other schemes has significantly improved access to inputs, lowered the cost of food in urban centres, and created thousands of rural jobs.
President Tinubu’s agribusiness revolution places strong emphasis on youth empowerment. Through the promotion of cooperative farming models, agritech innovation hubs, and digital extension services, young Nigerians are being positioned as key drivers of food security, innovation, and economic transformation.
The administration is also actively engaging private sector investors, academic institutions, and development partners to scale the reach and impact of its agricultural transformation strategy, with the ultimate goal of achieving national food sufficiency and building a resilient agrifood economy.
