President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Right Honourable Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Third Republic, describing him as a courageous democrat and one of Nigeria’s most principled legislators.

Chief Anaekwe, who died at the age of 69, was widely respected for his firm opposition to military dictatorship and his contributions to the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria.

In a condolence message, President Tinubu commiserated with the Anaekwe family, as well as the government and people of Anambra State, noting that the late Speaker’s leadership during a turbulent political period remains etched in history.

The President recalled his time in the National Assembly during the same period, praising Chief Anaekwe’s boldness, discipline, and commitment to democratic ideals. He said the late parliamentarian provided the stability and direction the House needed during moments of national uncertainty.

President Tinubu also highlighted Chief Anaekwe’s continued service to nation-building following the return of democracy in 1999, including his role in helping to found the Action Congress (AC) in 2006, where he served as the party’s first interim chairman in Anambra State.

Describing him as a steadfast member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Caucus, the President said Chief Anaekwe’s legacy of diligence, integrity, and patriotism would continue to inspire lawmakers and public servants across generations.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and asked God to comfort his family and all those mourning his passing.
