PRESIDENT TINUBU MOURNS PASSING OF VETERAN JOURNALIST DAN AGBESE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the death of Chief Dan Agbese, a veteran journalist, author, prose stylist, and co-founder of the pioneering Newswatch weekly magazine.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Agbese, who held the traditional title of Awan’Otun of Agila town in Ado LGA, Benue State, passed away on Monday in Lagos at the age of 81.

President Tinubu described Agbese’s death as a “painful and profound loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the nation as a whole,” noting that he, alongside his colleagues at Newswatch, helped usher in a new era of investigative and interpretative journalism in Nigeria. The President emphasized that Agbese’s work set high standards for ethical, courageous reporting and inspired generations of media practitioners.

Commending his integrity and commitment to truth, President Tinubu stated, “Dan Agbese was not just a journalist; he was an institution. His pen shaped public opinion, strengthened democratic discourse, and will continue to guide the noble calling of journalism in our nation.” He extended his condolences to Agbese’s family and the entire media community.
