President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of a free healthcare access initiative targeted at low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, describing it as a vital element of social protection and dignity in retirement.
He also ordered the prompt implementation of the long-overdue pension increase and the introduction of a minimum pension guarantee to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners within the scheme.
These directives followed a comprehensive briefing by the Director General of the National Pension Commission, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.
The President further instructed the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the lingering issue concerning the police pension, stressing that officers who have served and protected the nation must be able to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
Ms. Oloworaran also informed the President of ongoing efforts to preserve the value of pension fund assets in the face of inflation and economic challenges. She presented plans to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to the pension system through foreign currency accounts.
President Tinubu expressed strong support for the reform measures and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and the protection of vulnerable citizens.
The DG concluded the briefing by highlighting several transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing retiree welfare and expanding the reach of the Contributory Pension Scheme.
