President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyinsola Hamidat Abiola, describing her as a trailblazing journalist, a pillar of democracy, and a role model for generations of Nigerian women. In a heartfelt message, the President highlighted her groundbreaking achievements, including becoming the first female editor of a national newspaper and the first female managing director of a daily newspaper in Nigeria. Dr. Abiola, who died at the age of 82, was praised for her integrity, excellence, and lifelong dedication to public service and journalism.

Dr. Abiola’s legacy was not limited to media. As the wife of the late Bashorun MKO Abiola, she played an instrumental role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly during the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Despite the military government’s clampdown on the Concord Group, which she led, she stood firm in demanding the validation of her husband’s victory. President Tinubu recalled their personal relationship and her unwavering commitment to the democratic cause, calling her a true soldier of democracy.

The President extended his condolences to the Abiola and Aboaba families, her daughter Doyinsola, and the governments and people of Lagos and Ogun States. He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and called on the nation to celebrate and emulate her legacy. According to President Tinubu, Dr. Doyin Abiola’s life remains a powerful inspiration, not only in journalism but also in the fight for justice, equality, and democratic governance.
