In a statement released by the presidency, President Tinubu extolled General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity, development, and peace, describing him as a “gentleman extraordinaire” and one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most respected leaders.

Reflecting on General Gowon’s career, the President lauded his leadership during and after Nigeria’s civil war, highlighting his pivotal role in national reconciliation and nation-building. President Tinubu noted, “As the nation’s head of state, he significantly contributed to nation-building and development and can rightly be called the father of national infrastructure.” He further praised General Gowon’s philosophy of “No victor, no vanquished” after the civil war, which helped to foster national healing and peace.

President Tinubu also acknowledged General Gowon’s legacy beyond Nigeria’s borders, particularly his instrumental role in founding the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975, which has since played a critical role in the region’s political and economic stability.

In his tribute, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for General Gowon’s continued mentorship and counsel, mentioning how the former leader has provided valuable advice during various moments of diplomatic challenges, especially in maintaining peace with neighboring Sahelian states.

The President also commended General Gowon’s post-leadership life, noting his commitment to learning and public service, as evidenced by his “Nigeria Prays” program, which advocates for national unity and religious tolerance. President Tinubu said, “General Gowon’s life outside the office is also remarkable… demonstrating that age and status are never barriers to seeking to be the best we can be.”

In conclusion, President Tinubu expressed his hope for General Gowon’s continued health and wisdom, adding, “His sterling example remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for us in government, encouraging us to do our best for our beloved country.”

General Gowon, who became Nigeria’s Head of State at the age of 32, is widely remembered for his leadership during Nigeria’s most turbulent period and his lasting contributions to both national and regional development.
