President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Ogwuegbu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family of Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, following his passing. In a statement issued from the State House, the President extended his sympathy to the Nigerian legal community, acknowledging Justice Ogwuegbu’s remarkable contributions to the judiciary and his role in mentoring generations of judges and lawyers.

Justice Ogwuegbu, born in 1933 in Amaiyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, dedicated over five decades to Nigerian law, rising to the position of Supreme Court Justice. His distinguished career also included serving as President of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. In 1999, he chaired the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, tasked with investigating human rights abuses during the military era, cementing his legacy as a staunch advocate for justice.

Reflecting on Justice Ogwuegbu’s impact, President Tinubu praised his dedication to integrity, discipline, and excellence, values that have left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape. President Tinubu highlighted Justice Ogwuegbu’s significant role in strengthening the judiciary, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring justice prevailed impartially.

Justice Ogwuegbu’s landmark rulings on issues like federalism, university autonomy, and individual rights under the Nigerian Constitution remain guiding principles in Nigerian law. His expertise extended to critical areas, including banking regulations and monetary policy.

President Tinubu offered prayers for the bereaved family, honoring Justice Ogwuegbu’s legacy as an enduring beacon of justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
