President Tinubu Prioritizes the North in National Human Capital Renewal Through Education Investment

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, education in Northern Nigeria is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at reversing years of underfunding and low enrollment. Central to this effort is the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which currently supports over 396,000 students nationwide. Notably, more than 55 percent of the beneficiaries are from the North, translating to over ₦45 billion of the ₦77 billion disbursed so far.

Beyond financial aid, the Tinubu administration has taken deliberate steps to address structural education challenges in the region. Over 120 modern learning centres have been built across Northern senatorial districts, while over 101 integrated Tsangaya Almajiri schools are being established or revived. A dedicated commission has also been created to focus on Almajiri and out of school children.

Teacher retraining, curriculum reform, and the introduction of dual mode learning systems in colleges of education further reflect the government’s long term strategy. More than 450 Tsangaya teachers have already been retrained, and infrastructure development continues to scale.

Additionally, programmes like the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative and the broader TVET transformation plan are empowering Northern youth with practical skills in solar technology, digital tools, creative arts, and agriculture. These investments confirm that the North is not just included in national education reform but is leading it.
