In a bold move to promote cleaner energy alternatives and reduce the nation’s reliance on petrol, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the conversion of traditional fuel filling stations into outlets for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This initiative was disclosed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipke Ekpo.
Speaking to the press, Ekpo revealed that the President’s decision is aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources, reducing fuel costs, and enhancing environmental sustainability. “President Bola Tinubu wants filling stations across the country to be converted into CNG outlets,” the minister stated, noting that this strategic shift is part of the administration’s broader energy reform agenda.
The conversion of filling stations to CNG is expected to significantly cut fuel expenses for Nigerians, as CNG is a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol. It is also anticipated to help the country reduce its carbon emissions and align with global efforts to combat climate change.
According to Ekpo, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources has already started working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with plans to roll out CNG stations nationwide in the coming months. This initiative aligns with the government’s drive to diversify Nigeria’s energy sector and leverage its abundant natural gas reserves.
This development marks a significant step in the Tinubu administration’s goal of creating a more sustainable and economically viable energy landscape for Nigeria.
