President Tinubu Secures Partnership with Dutch Firm for 1GW Solar Panel Factory

Nigeria has entered into a landmark partnership with Dutch renewable energy company Solarge BV to establish a 1 gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic (PV) panel manufacturing facility in the country. The project will be implemented through a special purpose vehicle known as Solarge Nigeria Limited, formed in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and Solarge BV.

The new factory is designed to boost Nigeria’s clean energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported solar panels. In line with the agreement, the plant is expected to achieve 50 percent local content within the first three years, ensuring that at least half of its components and materials are sourced or produced locally. This will stimulate domestic industries, create jobs, and promote technology transfer to Nigeria.

As part of the deal, the REA has committed to purchasing a minimum of 200 megawatts (MW) of solar modules annually from the factory for a period of five years. These modules will support government-backed solarisation programmes, particularly under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), aimed at providing reliable clean power to public institutions.

The 1GW solar factory aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), which prioritises renewable energy, industrialisation, and energy security. Officials say the project will serve as a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy transition by fostering sustainability, driving local manufacturing, and positioning the country as a hub for solar technology in Africa.
