President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Niger State following a tragic boat accident that occurred on Tuesday night in Mokwa Local Government Area. The boat, reportedly carrying about 300 people—mostly women and children—capsized while sailing on the Gbajibo River from the Mundi community.
Rescue efforts have so far saved at least 150 people, while 25 bodies have been recovered. Many passengers remain unaccounted for, with local divers and emergency workers continuing the search for survivors.
President Tinubu offered his prayers and deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and called for divine repose for the souls of the deceased.
In response to the tragedy, the President directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the increasing frequency of boat accidents in Niger State and across Nigeria. He urged the authority to develop effective strategies to prevent such incidents from recurring, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety of passengers.
Additionally, President Tinubu ordered NIWA to enhance its surveillance of the country’s inland waters and to prosecute boat operators found violating safety regulations, including the ban on night sailing.
The President commended the efforts of local divers and emergency responders who have been tirelessly working to find the remaining victims, offering his gratitude for their dedication and bravery during this difficult time.
