President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The brief swearing-in ceremony took place inside the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Thursday morning.

Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently came to an end.

The new INEC Chairman took the oath of office administered by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and other members of the Federal Executive Council.

In his remarks, President Tinubu congratulated Professor Amupitan and urged him to uphold transparency, fairness, and integrity in the conduct of Nigeria’s electoral processes.

The President emphasized that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, his administration remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible, free, and fair elections at all levels.

Professor Amupitan, in his response, expressed gratitude to the President for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work tirelessly to deepen electoral reforms, enhance the use of technology, and build public trust in the commission.

The swearing-in marks a new phase for the electoral body as preparations continue for upcoming off-cycle governorship and local council elections across the country.
