President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged Nigerian editors to uphold the highest standards of truth, balance, and professionalism in their work, emphasizing that responsible journalism remains essential to the sustenance of democracy and national cohesion.

Speaking at the 21st Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, President Tinubu commended the role of the media in shaping national direction and strengthening democratic life. He noted that throughout Nigeria’s history, journalism has served as an instrument of national awakening, from resisting colonial injustice to defending democracy during military rule.

The President urged editors to remain steadfast in their duty as gatekeepers of the nation’s information space, stating that while social media has made every citizen a potential publisher, it has also accelerated the spread of misinformation. He reminded them that “verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgement your guide.”

President Tinubu further highlighted his administration’s ongoing economic reforms, assuring that despite challenges, they are designed to restore stability, boost investment, and translate growth into tangible benefits for citizens. He called on the media to foster trust, unity, and reason in public discourse, adding that nation-building requires cooperation between government, the private sector, civil society, and the media.

The President concluded by urging editors to continue reporting boldly and truthfully, critiquing government policies with fairness and knowledge. “The tone you set in your newsrooms and the courage with which you defend the truth will help shape the direction of our national journey,” he said.
