President Tinubu to Power Public Institutions with N100bn Fuel Subsidy Savings

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will use N100 billion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy to power 37 federal universities and 7 affiliated teaching hospitals with renewable energy. The initiative, led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in partnership with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, is aimed at cutting costs, promoting clean energy, and boosting learning environments across Nigeria.

The project, which builds on the Energizing Education Programme of previous administrations, will now see its Phase 4 fully funded through subsidy savings, unlike earlier phases financed by the Federal Government’s Green Bond, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank. It will also create direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians, with local solar companies taking the lead in implementation under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative.

Beyond infrastructure, the program includes a human capital development plan that will train and support 380 female STEM students with stipends. The government says this approach will strengthen local capacity in renewable energy, support technology transfer, and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term sustainability goals.
