President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep pride and joy over the Super Falcons’ triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a record-extending 10th continental title.
In a post-match video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the players, and officials, President Tinubu commended the Falcons for their historic win and unrelenting spirit, stating
“I am very very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy.”
The President lauded the team’s courage, resilience, and outstanding performance throughout the tournament. He also extended congratulations to the coaching crew, management, and federal officials who supported the team.
President Tinubu reserved special praise for Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament, and for Esther Okoronkwo, whose calm execution of a 64th-minute penalty ignited Nigeria’s comeback in the final. Okoronkwo also assisted the second goal and delivered the free kick that led to Jennifer Echegini’s winning goal in Nigeria’s 3–2 victory over Morocco.
“Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, and God bless you,” the President said, as the jubilant players repeatedly echoed, “Thank you Mr President”
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ajibade thanked the President for approving the full payment of players’ allowances and assured him that the team looked forward to presenting the WAFCON trophy to him in Abuja.
The call ended on a joyful note with a spirited rendition of the national anthem and three thunderous Gbosa cheers for the President.
