President Bola Tinubu has called on the Edo State governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to prioritize the development of his state, assuring him of the Federal Government’s full backing and the support of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).
The president made this statement on Thursday during a meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The event also saw the Edo governor-elect and his deputy, Rep. Dennis Idahosa, present their certificates of return to the president.

In his remarks, President Tinubu emphasized the need for good governance and urged Okpebholo to deliver on his promises to the people of Edo State. “Governor-elect, you can now face the task of development. We are here to work with you. You have seen the progressive governors of APC. They are truly progressive. Work with them. Learn the ropes, and I believe you are up to the task,” Tinubu said.
The president further acknowledged the complexity of democratic governance, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, but reiterated his belief that democracy remains the best system. “You have earned the victory. Democracy is difficult, particularly in emerging democracies and economies like ours. If you hear complaints from places like America, you know how difficult it is to navigate democracy. But it remains the best form of government,” he added.
Tinubu congratulated both Okpebholo and his deputy, describing their partnership as a “good symbol of people ordained by God to work together.” The president praised their ability to set aside rivalry to unite in a common cause for the benefit of their state. “You started as rivals and ended up as partners. You are a symbol of good understanding in politics,” he remarked.

The president also paid tribute to former Edo State governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, for his role in the party’s victory in the gubernatorial election. Tinubu acknowledged the tireless efforts of APC governors and leaders in the state, crediting their determination for the successful outcome.
“I saw Adams Oshiomhole radiating in joy… sincerely, the governors showed up in Edo, they impressed me. They defended the party and worked hard for the party,” he said.
President Tinubu extended his appreciation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and organized election, free from violence or disturbances. “There was no bloodshed, no riot. People voted and went back to their houses in peace, and the fears dissipated instantly,” he noted.
The president encouraged the APC leadership and its members to remain united and committed to the party’s Renewed Hope Agenda, urging them not to be swayed by critics. “Never mind the noise makers. I do a lot of statistical sampling and results. When you hear politicians saying ‘all politics is local,’ you must respect that notion,” Tinubu stated.
A notable moment from the election, Tinubu highlighted, was the heavy rain on election day and the electorate’s dedication to vote despite the downpour. Referring to the remarks made by APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje, the president said, “It is a very punching illustration… People came out to vote without using an umbrella.”
Senator Abdullahi Ganduje, in his own remarks, praised the steadfastness of the electorate, highlighting the symbolism of their determination. “Your Excellency, the people were convinced that our party is the party to be voted for, and we won the election,” Ganduje said.
With a strong mandate, President Tinubu affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the governor-elect in ensuring the continued growth and progress of Edo State.
