President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to eradicating security threats and violent crimes in Nigeria, while also pledging to promote stability and peace across the African continent. Tinubu made this commitment on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Africa Military Games (AMGA) held in Abuja.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President highlighted the importance of fostering unity among African nations and strengthening ties to address the continent’s security challenges. “Let me use this opportunity to declare the resolve and unflinching commitment of my administration to rid the nation of security threats and violent crimes. Moreover, as the ECOWAS Chairman, I am determined to stabilize the sub-region and ensure prosperity across Africa,” Tinubu said.

The President emphasized the role of camaraderie among African troops in achieving these goals, noting that the Africa Military Games—held two decades after its inaugural edition—provided an ideal platform for strengthening collaborative frameworks to combat insecurity.

President Tinubu expressed optimism that the military sports event would inspire a renewed spirit of friendship and cooperation among Africa’s armed forces. “The spirit of comradeship and friendship awakened through this event is crucial for enhanced military cooperation across the continent,” he said.

He also underscored the importance of physical fitness for military personnel, stating that participation in sports ensures the optimal mental, emotional, and physical well-being needed to navigate an increasingly complex and volatile security landscape.

Tinubu commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General Maikano Abdullahi, for their leadership in organizing the milestone event.

The President declared the Africa Military Games 2024 officially closed and congratulated all participants for their professionalism, sportsmanship, and conduct throughout the competition. He described the games as a resounding success, free of major incidents, and a source of pride for Africa.

Team Nigeria emerged as the overall winner of the AMGA 2024, securing an impressive 234 medals, including 114 gold, 65 silver, and 55 bronze. Algeria and Kenya placed second and third, with 96 and 50 medals, respectively.

In his remarks, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa praised the games as a unifying event that showcased the courage, skill, and resilience of African troops. “Victory is not just about crossing the finish line first; it is about embodying the values of unity and resilience,” he said.

OSMA President Major General Maikano Abdullahi echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the games in promoting shared values and cooperation. “Athletes from across the continent transcended borders and differences to unite for a common purpose, celebrating the ideals of the African armed forces,” he noted.

The Africa Military Games 2024 concluded on a high note, with leaders expressing optimism that the event would serve as a stepping stone for stronger military collaboration across the continent.
