Vice President Kashim Shettima has commended the inauguration of the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security, highlighting it as a critical milestone in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The Vice President, represented by Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, delivered his remarks during the National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security held in Abuja. He described the legislative initiative as a strong foundation for aligning nutrition-focused policies across federal and state levels.
Shettima emphasized that nutrition is now being repositioned as a central pillar of Nigeria’s development strategy under the Tinubu administration. A key example is the Nutrition 774 programme, which targets grassroots communities across the country to tackle food insecurity and child malnutrition. He pointed out that over 40 percent of children under five years of age in Nigeria face stunted growth due to malnutrition, but the government is taking deliberate steps to reverse this trend.
He stated that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just about promises but about delivering measurable results that impact lives. He urged lawmakers across all levels to align budget allocations and legislation with national nutrition goals, noting that combating malnutrition is a matter of justice and national priority. The creation of the National Legislative Network is expected to strengthen legislative advocacy and promote long-term policy sustainability in addressing hunger and food insecurity.
President Tinubu’s administration is actively fostering a unified front between the executive and legislative arms of government to tackle malnutrition as a national emergency.
