The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate approved under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise has been released so far.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Attorney General explained that the process is still at its final administrative stage, which involves a comprehensive review to ensure that all names and recommendations meet established legal and procedural requirements before any release instruments are issued.
According to him, the final stage comes after approval by the Council of State and involves issuing formal instruments for implementation. This phase, he said, allows for a last verification of the list for any necessary corrections before it is sent to the Controller General of Corrections for execution.
Fagbemi stressed that the review process is a standard protocol designed to uphold transparency, accountability, and due diligence. He also appreciated the public’s vigilance and constructive engagement, noting that such interest reflects Nigerians’ deep concern for justice and good governance.
“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy,” he stated.
He assured that once all legal and procedural checks are completed, the public will be duly informed, emphasizing that “the rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
