As preparations for the burial of the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, gain momentum, Senator Ben Obi, head of the burial planning committee, has revealed that several high-profile figures from across Nigeria have indicated their interest in attending the ceremony.
Among those expected at the event are former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the five governors from the South-East, and Yoruba leader Ayo Adebanjo. The late Iwuanyanwu, an iconic entrepreneur and politician, will be laid to rest at his country home in Attah, Imo State, on November 1, 2024.
Addressing the media in Abuja on Saturday, Obi, who was represented by Prof. Ike Ikechukwu, Chairman of the Media Sub-committee, confirmed the strong support from various stakeholders. “We have continued with the needed sensitization of respected elder statesmen and women, as well as stakeholders, friends, and well-wishers from within and outside the country,” he said.
The South-East governors, in their most recent meeting, reaffirmed their commitment to giving the late Iwuanyanwu a befitting and dignified farewell. Additionally, the Nigerian Diaspora community has been involved in organizing events to honor the late leader, who was affectionately known as Ahaejiagamba for his dedication to Igbo causes.
The series of activities planned to celebrate Iwuanyanwu’s legacy will culminate with his final interment on November 1. “The South-East governors and national stakeholders have demonstrated immense support to ensure our leader receives the dignified exit rites he deserves,” Obi added.
Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a towering figure in Igbo politics and business, was widely respected for his contributions to the development of the region and his commitment to national unity. His passing marks the end of an era for many within the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and beyond, and his burial is expected to draw influential figures from across Nigeria’s political and social landscape.
