Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31.

The World Cup winner recently joined newly-promoted Serie A side Como on a free transfer from Manchester United. However, injuries have impacted the final years of his career, leading the former Real Madrid and Lens defender to make the decision to retire, which he shared on Instagram on Wednesday morning.

“They say all good things must come to an end,” Varane began. “Throughout my career, I have faced many challenges and risen to meet them, often in seemingly impossible situations. I have experienced incredible emotions and created special memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments fills me with immense pride, and it is with a sense of fulfillment that I announce my retirement from the game we all love.

“I hold myself to the highest standards and want to leave the sport on a strong note rather than simply holding on. It takes great courage to listen to your heart and instincts. Desire and needs are different, and while I have fallen and risen countless times, now is the moment to hang up my boots, ending with a trophy at Wembley.

“I have cherished the fight for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates, and the supporters of every team I’ve played for—from Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and with our national team. I have defended every badge with all my heart and loved every moment of this journey. Competing at the highest level is exhilarating; it challenges every aspect of your body and mind. The emotions we experience are unlike any other. As athletes, we are never satisfied; our drive is part of our nature.

“I have no regrets and wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamed possible, but beyond the trophies and accolades, I take pride in sticking to my principles and striving to leave every place better than I found it. I hope I’ve made you all proud.

“And so, a new chapter begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como, just without my boots and shin pads. I look forward to sharing more about this soon.

“To the supporters of every club I’ve played for, to my teammates, coaches, and staff… thank you for making this journey more special than I could have ever imagined.

“Thank you, football. With love, Rapha.”
