The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says it deployed over 200 mini-grids in 2025, advancing efforts to boost electricity access for underserved communities nationwide.
Managing Director Abba Abubakar-Aliyu said the installations were delivered under the Nigeria Electrification Project, and form part of ongoing measures to bridge Nigeria’s power access gap. He added that the agency is now accelerating work under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) programme, which targets 1,350 mini-grids across the country.
According to the REA, over 900 mini-grids are currently under construction, including 250 interconnected systems designed to link with local distribution networks. The agency is also working with 21 states to align electrification planning and improve project delivery.
Aliyu noted that Nigeria will require about $23 billion to close its national electricity access deficit, while ongoing manufacturing investments are helping expand domestic renewable energy capacity. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
