The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has urgently advised residents along the banks of the River Niger and River Benue to relocate to safer areas to protect their lives and property.

In a statement on Friday, Director General Umar Mohammed noted that water levels in both rivers have reached critical levels. He urged Nigerians to follow the Agency’s guidance by clearing drainages and gutters to facilitate water runoff.

Mohammed also highlighted that the extended rainfall across the country has contributed to severe flash flooding.

He reiterated NIHSA’s commitment to managing and developing the nation’s water resources, stating that the Agency will continue to monitor river levels daily, issue flood warnings, and provide predictions.

“NIHSA is actively collaborating with emergency response agencies and the media to help safeguard lives and property, mitigate flood impacts, enhance food security, and promote national resilience,” the statement concluded.
