The Federal Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with the Presidential Committee on Nigeria’s Great Infrastructure (PCNGI), has launched the Renewed Hope Transportation Scheme in a transformative move to improve public transportation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The scheme, inaugurated on Thursday, November 28, 2024, represents a bold step towards addressing urban transportation challenges in Abuja. As part of the initiative, buses were handed over to key transport associations, including the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Speaking at the launch event, the Minister of Transportation highlighted the government’s commitment to improving accessibility and affordability in the transportation sector. “This initiative is a testament to the government’s renewed focus on providing efficient and affordable transport options for all Nigerians. With the active involvement of these transport unions, we are confident that this scheme will meet the needs of commuters in Abuja and beyond,” the minister stated.
The Renewed Hope Transportation Scheme is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation’s transport infrastructure, reduce travel time, and ease congestion in major cities. The buses, equipped with modern amenities, are expected to provide safer and more comfortable travel experiences for residents.
Leaders from RTEAN, NARTO, and NURTW expressed gratitude for the federal government’s support, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring effective management and maintenance of the vehicles for the benefit of the public.
Commuters in the FCT have welcomed the initiative, anticipating improved transport services that could alleviate the challenges of urban mobility. The launch marks the beginning of a phased rollout, with plans to extend the scheme to other regions in the near future.
The Renewed Hope Transportation Scheme underscores the federal government’s dedication to building a robust and sustainable transportation network, aiming to drive socio-economic development and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians.
