Reps Advance Bill to Disqualify Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Others from Future Elections

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill that seeks to prohibit individuals above 60 years from contesting for the offices of President and Governor in Nigeria.If enacted, the bill would disqualify President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi from running in the 2027 presidential election, as all are above the proposed age limit.Key Provisions of the BillSponsored by Imo lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere, the bill is titled:> “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Review the Requirements that Qualify a Person to be Elected as President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Governors and Deputy Governor of a State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for Related Matters.”Among its key provisions, the bill proposes:A university degree as the minimum educational qualification for Presidential and Gubernatorial candidates.A new age cap of 60 years for candidates vying for these positions.Other Key Legislative AdvancementsSeveral other significant bills also scaled second reading during Thursday’s plenary session:1.
