The House of Representatives will present N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, to support vulnerable Nigerians affected by the removal of the petrol subsidy.

During Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abba announced, “About five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am pleased to inform you that, to date, we have contributed N704,907,578.82.”

He continued, “On December 31, I will lead a delegation of House leadership to hand over the funds to the President for the exclusive benefit of the vulnerable Nigerians who truly need it.”

Abba emphasized, “This contribution reflects the commitment and dedication of members to addressing the urgent needs of Nigerians.”

It was recalled that on July 18, the House of Representatives agreed to donate 50 percent of their salaries over six months to help Nigerians cope with the challenges following the adoption of a motion during a plenary session.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who moved the motion in July, explained, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to resolve the country’s challenges. I urge my colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent of our salaries for six months.”

He added, “Our salary is N600,000 a month. I ask that we contribute half of it for the next six months.”
