
The Nigeria House of Representatives has decided to be involved in the ongoing discussion between the Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities for the purpose of ending the two-week warning strike announced by ASUU on Monday.
A member representing Badagry Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress, Sesi Whinga, have moved a motion on Tuesday via channels TV report.
Whingan said the intervention of the green chamber’s leadership is to find a permanent solution to the persisting industrial fight that has destroyed Nigeria’s public university system for years.
The body had on Monday started a two-week nationwide warning strike after the end of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the FG to meet its demands.
The lecturers are asking for the execution of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, payment of retained three-and-a-half months’ salaries, revitalisation of public universities, and sustainable funding of the tertiary education sector.
Other crisis include the payment of 25–35% salary arrears, promotion arrears spanning over four years and the release of withheld cooperative deductions.
The most recent request, led by Yayale Ahmed, submitted its report in December 2024, but execution is yet to begin.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, apparently directed university vice-chancellors to enforce the government’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for lecturers participating in the industrial action.
The strike, which is still ongoing has already disorganized examinations in several universities nationwide, sparking renewed calls for urgent government action.
The Lawmakers stated that the House leadership will involve both sides in the coming days to prevent a full-blown shutdown of the nation’s tertiary institutions.
