The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has instructed its members to return to work on Monday (today) after a seven-day nationwide warning strike over the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola. Popoola, who has been missing for eight months, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
NARD began the strike last Monday to demand Popoola’s rescue and will reassess the Federal Government’s progress on their demands in three weeks. Despite the government’s threat to enforce a ‘no work, no pay’ policy, the doctors have remained resolute.
NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi stated, “We are suspending the strike now and will review the government’s progress in the next three weeks. We are resuming work on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 8 a.m. Although government engagement has improved slightly, we hope they will continue their efforts.”
