The Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has appealed to the Nigerian Senate for strong legislative support to drive the state’s development agenda, particularly in tackling insecurity and addressing key infrastructure challenges.
He made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the Senate Committee on Works to the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, April 4, 2025.
Highlighting his administration’s priorities, Ibas stressed the importance of sustaining socioeconomic activities and providing critical infrastructure to boost economic growth and improve the quality of life in Rivers State.
The Senate delegation, led by Senator Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East), also included representatives from Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, headed by Managing Director Dr. Peer Lubasch.
Ibas praised the visit as a testament to the National Assembly’s commitment to the progress of Rivers State.
“We are in the process of putting together a new budget that reflects our commitment to healthcare, education, social services, as well as the continued infrastructural development of our state,” he said.
“We have worked diligently to ensure that this process is transparent, inclusive, and most importantly, expediting.”
“The new budget, which is nearing finalisation, focuses on creating job opportunities and investing in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and technology.”
“As we move forward with these initiatives, we need your continued support to help us secure necessary resources and legislative backing to bring them to fruition. Your partnership is critical to our success in ensuring that Rivers State remains on the path of progress and enduring peace for future generations.”
Federal Projects in Rivers State
During the engagement, Ibas urged the Senate to facilitate federal funding and accelerate the execution of key federal projects in Rivers State. He emphasized the state’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s economy.
“Rivers State, the treasure base of the nation and a key economic hub, is home to vital infrastructure including roads, bridges, sea and airports, oil and gas facilities, a petrochemical company, refineries, and other essential structures.
“However, as in most states of the nation, we are faced with challenges of maintaining and expanding this infrastructure due to various factors, including but not limited to resource constraints.”
He appealed to the lawmakers to advocate for Rivers State within the National Assembly to ensure sustainable development through adequate attention and funding.
Since assuming office on March 20, 2025, Ibas said his administration has focused on restoring peace and stability in the region.
“We have engaged with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and government officials, to rebuild trust and foster a conducive environment for investment and development,” he noted.
Senate Reaffirms Support
Senator Mpigi reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to supporting development in Rivers State, noting that the committee was on a mission to inspect ongoing federal projects, including the Bodo-Bonny Link Road and the Coastal Road Project, which is currently 40% complete.
He commended the Administrator’s efforts and encouraged continued focus on security and infrastructure to protect lives and property across the state.
