The Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare across the state.
Speaking during a strategic meeting with the leadership of organised labour unions at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Ibas assured workers that their interests remain a top priority.
According to a statement from the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Administrator, Hector Igbikiowubo, the meeting provided a platform for open dialogue on key labour and employment issues in the state.
The statement highlighted several critical areas the administration is currently addressing, including:
- Timely payment of salaries and pensions
- Resolution of salary arrears
- Approval for payment of newly employed staff at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and the judiciary
Additionally, local government medical workers are expected to receive their full entitlements, while the minimum wage has been fully implemented for all local government employees in Rivers State.
The administrator also noted ongoing efforts to resolve concerns related to the contributory pension scheme, ahead of its July 2025 implementation deadline.
As part of broader welfare initiatives, Ibas revealed that the government would expand its fleet of intervention buses to ease workers’ daily commute. He also announced the launch of specialised leadership training for senior civil servants, scheduled to begin within two weeks.
Furthermore, the administration is actively considering the implementation of the N32,000 consequential pension adjustment and is working to settle outstanding gratuities owed to retirees.
While commending workers for their resilience and dedication, the administrator emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation with labour unions to maintain industrial peace in the state.
“We are committed to workers’ welfare and we urge continued collaboration to achieve sustainable progress,” Ibas said.
In response, State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Alex Agwanwor, expressed appreciation for the administration’s efforts and reaffirmed labour’s commitment to ongoing dialogue and partnership.
“We acknowledge the steps taken so far and remain committed to working with the government to achieve our collective goals,” Agwanwor stated.
Meanwhile, the NLC has directed all its members in Rivers State to mark International Workers’ Day with a peaceful rally. The event will be held within the NLC premises and will involve all affiliate unions, focusing on the call for the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.
