Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has tipped Declan Rice as a future England captain after the Arsenal midfielder delivered a dominant performance in his side’s Premier League victory over Everton.

Rooney was in attendance as Mikel Arteta’s men ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win on Saturday evening, a result that returned Arsenal to the top of the table. Rice was at the heart of the display, controlling midfield proceedings and showcasing the leadership qualities that Rooney believes mark him out as a natural successor to current skipper Harry Kane.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Rooney said Rice already looks ready to shoulder greater responsibility with the national team.

“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said. “His drive and his personality really stand out. Everyone who knows him seems to love him.

“He was all over the pitch against Everton. His decision-making — when to pass, where to pass, which foot to use — the detail in his passing was a pleasure to watch. He was absolutely incredible.

“He was splitting centre-backs, dropping in to take the ball from the defenders, acting as a third centre-back, then the next minute he’s in the box trying to score. Some of what he does is underrated.

“He’s the right one to take over for me because of his drive and personality. Everyone who knows him speaks highly of him. He’s irreplaceable for England.”
