Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, was among the early dignitaries who gathered on Tuesday at the Daura residence of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, as the town prepared for his burial.

Amaechi, who holds the traditional title of Dan Amanar Daura — meaning Trusted Son of Daura — arrived dressed in the full regalia of the emirate, symbolising deep respect and solidarity with the family and the people of Daura. He was honoured with the title in 2022 for his service and perceived loyalty to the region.

Joining him at the somber gathering was Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a former Borno State governor and senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sheriff joined mourners, political allies, and family members as they awaited the arrival of Buhari’s remains from London, where the former president passed away in a hospital at the age of 82.

Buhari is expected to be laid to rest later today in Daura, his hometown, in accordance with Islamic funeral rites. The atmosphere remained solemn as security tightened and final burial arrangements were underway, with more high-profile guests expected throughout the day.

The passing of Buhari, Nigeria’s leader from 2015 to 2023, has drawn a wave of tributes from across the globe, with many hailing his commitment to anti-corruption and national security, even as his legacy remains a subject of public debate.
