Royal Air Maroc Pays Sanction Fee Over Baggage, Consumer Protection Violations

Moroccan national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has paid a sanction fee imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) after repeated violations of consumer-protection regulations, particularly in the handling of passengers’ baggage.

The NCAA said RAM was fined for persistent cases of short-landed baggage and for failing to respond adequately to customer complaints. According to Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, the Moroccan airline attracted “the heaviest fines among foreign carriers” because of the frequency and seriousness of its baggage issues.

While the regulator acknowledged that the airline has improved its responsiveness to complaints, it stressed that baggage handling problems remain ongoing. The NCAA warned that harsher sanctions would follow if RAM does not address what it described as “incessant anomalies.”

Achimugu emphasized that the sanctions are not just punitive but are aimed at enforcing compliance with consumer-protection rules, improving passenger experiences, and ensuring aviation safety.

The payment of the fine, however, does not close out complaints already lodged against the airline. The NCAA confirmed it will continue to investigate and follow up on all pending passenger grievances.
